Immigration

immigration, citizenship, refugees, border security, and international law.

Lofgren's panel will hear the immigration reform bills.

Conyers is one of the 121 co-sponsors of UAFA. Pelosi and Lofgren are not.

Ohio Reps. Dennis Kucinich of Cleveland and Betty Sutton of Akron, both Democrats, are also co-sponsors.

Nadler also wants all members of congress called, including senators, asking for UAFA to be included in comprehensive immigration reform in both chambers, though the senate has no bill yet.

The House immigration bill has been introduced without UAFA by Democrat Luis Gutierrez of Illinois.

New York Senator Charles Schumer is expected to introduce immigration reform in the Senate. It is not clear whether or not Schumer's proposal will include UAFA, though he is one of 23 Senate co-sponsors. Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown is also a UAFA co-sponsor.

The White House wants comprehensive immigration reform passed, but has not weighed in on the inclusion of UAFA.

Countries that already allow gays and lesbians to sponsor their partners for immigration include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Israel, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, South Africa, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

There are approximately 40,000 samesex couples in the United States threatened by the inability to sponsor partners for immigration, according to the latest census figures cited by Immigration Equality, which lobbies for LGBT people and people with HIV. Of those, 45 percent are raising children, and a significant number are caring for elderly parents. The average age of the partners is 38.

Nadler is a long time champion of immigration equality, having introduced similar bills in every congressional session since 2000. Until 2007, they were called the Permanent Partner Immigration Acts.

In 2004, Leahy began introducing companion bills in the Senate.

Fisher

supports marriage equality. Believing in equal protection under the law, Lee believes that government has no business preventing Americans from entering into committed relationships and denying them basic rights, such as hospital visitation."

Mentions Ohio hate crime law

At the City Club last month, Fisher followed his marriage answer with another

statement:

"You know, I wrote Ohio's hate crime law. I defended it before the Ohio Supreme Court as attorney general," Fisher said. "Peggy's [his wife's] brother died of AIDS and we led the fight against HIV and AIDS along with people here in town for 20 years. I am a strong supporter of the LGBT community."

Ohio's hate crime law, properly called the Ethnic Intimidation Act, was written by Fisher when he served in the Ohio Senate. It does not include sexual orientation or gender identity, which Brunner pointed out in her rebuttal.

"Ohio's hate crime law doesn't say anything about the rights of LGBT citizens," Brunner said.

During his endorsement interview with Cleveland Stonewall Democrats, Fisher reportedly said that he would include sexual orientation in the measure if he had the chance to do it again.

The campaign did not make Fisher available, but when asked if the hate crime law reference at the City Club was a misstatement, spokesperson John Collins said, "No, it is not a misstatement."

"You're missing the forest for the trees," Collins said. "What he's trying to do with

that answer is talk about a fight he's been part of for a long time."

"[Fisher] has a track record for working to end discrimination in Ohio," Collins said. Collins agreed to answer specific questions about marriage, but only in writing. In the answers, Fisher's position moved again.

"Does Lee Fisher support marriage between two people of the same sex being completely equal in name, in rights, in benefits (including federal, such as Social Security and ability to file joint tax returns) and stature as marriage between two people of the opposite sex?" Collins was asked.

"Yes," he wrote.

Fisher now acknowledges that marriage equality is a federal issue and supports the repeal of the DOMA of 1996, and says he will work to pass legislation to bring about marriage equality as defined in the question.

Polls show that the race could be won by either candidate, and that most voters are still undecided.

Fisher has more support among Democratic Party inside players, and has raised more money because of it, but Brunner is connecting with voters in other ways and has stronger support among important constituencies, including LGBT Democrats, women, and progressives.

Polls show both Democrats ahead of Portman in the general election. Fisher is on the web at www.fisherfor ohio.com.

Brunner is on the web at jenniferbrunner.com.
